Desert-Holly

Desert-Holly

Desert-Holly Saltbush (Atriplex hymenelytra) on route to Boulder Peak in Lake Mead Area, Nevada. January 2008. This is a small rounded shrub, which likes alkaline soils and hilly terrain. Its silver colored leaves are well adapted to the desert and reflect sunlight. The plant remains dormant during the summertime when temperatures soar around here. It continues to grow and bloom in wintertime. The flowers are yellow and are followed by tiny red fruits. Desert Holly is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.
