Dwarf Purple Monkey-flower (Mimulus nanus)
Dwarf purple monkey-flower is found on very dry soils in most of the western U.S. It is formally designated as rare in Montana and Wyoming. Though the habitats it prefers are very dry, this annual species is highly dependant on spring rains. In years when spring rains are lacking, it may not emerge or have a very limited bloom. The plants in this photo are approximately 1 inch tall. Photo from the Lookout Mountain Road in Baker County Oregon. June 2005
