Called in sick and hightailed it up the ridge on a beautiful fall day. Combined it with Black Buck, Lowary(Peak X), and Peak Y to make for one of the greatest solo days I've had in the mountains.

The first 500-600 vertical feet have 1/4-2 inches of snow that is hard and icy. Due to the steepness, I would strongly recomend crampons. Our party had significant dificulty getting down safely and had several bad falls on this section.

Around 600 vertical feet fromt he trailhead the snow is very light and fluffy, but only 3 feet deep. This means that you sink to the forest floor with each step and stumps, logs, bushes and rocks prevent effective navigation uphill on skis. We had to keep post holing for another 200-300 vertical feet before we hit a deeper crustier snow.

The dense trees and shrub thickets further hindered our skiing descent. There is not enough snow to cover all of these obstacles, and the snow that is there is mostly so light that my skis were hitting 12 inch logs on the forest floor.

!!!Wait for more snow before trying this one!!!!

Started climb with Pete and Lucy around 10 AM and got back approx. 12 hours later. She makes you work for it, but she is also very generous. Sick view of Grey Wolf. Lucy sure likes the Huckleberries.

When I climbed this peak in the summer, I was bluff charged by a big sow grizzly. She stopped at 10 yards and just looked at me. That was the worst best moment of my life. I am just glad by buddy never saw her, otherwise he would have been on the run, and I would have still been standing there having to explain myself to the bear.

Unrelenting trail up the the ridge but well worth the 4000' feet of gain over 2 miles. Awesome hike, would love to do it in winter.

3 x summer summits, 1x winter. The traverse to W st. mary looks like a fun winter route, anyone done it?

My first Mission peak and via the normal route. went with the New Rocky Mtneers club. Gerald was pleased to be the first to introduce me to this range, but even more so to see my eyes light up when he showed me the great face of Gray Wolf. I still seek a partner to do this face with.

This was a Rocky Mountaineers trip which included myself, Steven and Paul. Trail in good shape- someone has recently cleared a bunch of brush- THANKS! Didn't put ski's on till 6600'. Ascended into clouds and wind on ridge so views were non-existent. Reached summit in 4.5 hours. Snow all windblown and hard packed so ski back down was no good. Good climb though- not as difficult as I imagined it to be. Round trip in 8 hours.

With Fred.

Late season climb. We camped part way up and spent all the next day climbing Peak X, Y and East St Mary's. Fresh snow and rime on the uppermost part of the mountains.

Fred Spicker

Climbed with Moni Spicker.

We bypassed the peak on the way to Lowary (formerly Peak X) & "Y", then climbed it via the NE Ridge on the way back from those two. With a descent via the SE Ridge, it made a nice traverse of the peak.

Map ...That shows all three peaks well.

SaintgrizzlyRoute Climbed: Standard - from St. Mary's Lake Date Climbed: August 5, 2004  Sucess!

Saintgrizzly

First tried the peak a month earlier, on July 6th, but turned around just before the final pitch due to huge amounts of snow on the ridge leading to the summit, plus a strong and cold wind. A month later the weather was perfect! Nice day, but it's a big mountain, and the first couple miles are steep!

Saw something on this mountain I've never seen before. There is no summit log, but there are flat rocks scattered around the mountain top that are extremely soft (I have no idea what they are), and in the past people have scratched their names/dates into those rocks with some kind of sharp instrument (maybe a nail?). Quite the concept: there's this lonely summit with names written in stone on it!
