I love the reverso for belaying up a second. Joe belays up another climbing on the final pitch of the route.

It also helps to loosen up the rope if the second falls and the reverso locks up.

Belay

In my opinion, it doesn't make the belay more complex. And it certainly helps a ton if the second falls and you need to loosen up a jammed rope.

I believe the other device is a BD ATC-Guide.
