Fallen Giant and Carolina hemlocks
We paused at the top to see a fallen gnarly giant and a grove of still-thriving Carolina hemlocks.

We've lost almost all of our hemlocks here in NC. They're completely gone almost everywhere you go. The virgin stands in the Smokies and elsewhere are all dead. From Virginia south to Georgia all you see are standing snags where there were once hemlock trees.

South Mountains State Park is seeing most of its hemlock forests dead or dying right now. I was surprised to find this stand of Carolina hemlocks doing well. I guess because they're slightly isolated. Someone needs to head up there with some Safari brand adelgicide and treat them before it's too late.
