I hear ya, picking up a tail clear out there makes one feel,,, a long way from home.
I've heard it called Ferds cabin for years. The story I got was, it belonged to a guy named Ferd Zollinger from Mackay, He and his family owned the property around the cabin for several years, They, and several other cabin owners out here used to keep cabins stocked with supplies for back country travelers in need of shelter. Unfortunately, too many travelers leave them in the condition you saw it and stocking them is a dead tradition. Ferd was a raging alcoholic and Died young. They used to run sheep in the area until that started to interfere with the growing Big horn population. Cattle still range most of that area, and I beleive the land is owned by a corporation.

Ferd's Cabin

I was looking online to see if I could find some information about my father-in-law, Ferd Zollinger, and was pleasantly surprised to see this picture. The Zollinger family ranch produced cattle and used this cabin as a summer cow camp from the early 1940's to 1996. The once Z bar ranch is now known as the Circle pie ranch which is owned by a man named Ben Yates. Your information is fairly accurate and I was wondering where/how you found out about this cabin and the history. One spring as my husband had his dad were opening the cabin and found a note from a couple of wayward travelers who got caught in a thunderstorm. They apologized for using the cabin and left a bottle of brandy as a thank you. On top of that note they explained they got caught in another thunderstorm the next night and apologized for drinking the brandy.
