My first 'mountain'

When I was 10 or 11, we visited my grandparents at their home in Sedona, AZ. They lived on a tributary of Oak Creek and I spent a great deal of time exploring that area. Just behind this was a mountain, Table Top Mountain. The rise in elevation is just a few hundred feet, but this was the first time I'd seen a hill so large. Something deep inside of me said to climb to the top. So Mom, Dad, Poppy and I think Dad's Uncle Fred and his daughter hiked up it after I proposed the idea.

That pretty much hooked me on the mountains. I only remember bits and pieces of the hike and the area, but I do remember looking out across Sedona to the south and seeing some great 'peaks' that I thought would be even better. I remember looking at them and planning a route up.

Needless to say, no one was going to let an 11 year old climb by himself and no one looked to interested in heading up that one...

But it was a great afternoon spent on a great little hike.
