The usual approach on east side & Mitchell Caverns are part of a state preserve, where all off trail use is proposed to be banned.

Was planning to head up a couple of weeks ago, but after parking at the Mitchell Caverns visitor center, the ranger said that the backcountry in the area (including Fountain Peak) is closed to public use until further notice, supposedly something related to not yet being determined which agency would handle response to criminal activity or an accident.

The west side is the Mohave Nat. Preserve.
