Ruins of old Gearhart mine.
The Gearhart Mine produced 172,000 tons of coal from the 5 foot thick Palisade coal bed between 1930 and 1968. Coal was mined using room and pillar methods and hauled from the underground workings in mine cars. An arial tramway transported the coal from the portal area to the tipple (load out) at the foot of the mountain near I-70.
