Gorski kotar flora - Large flowered Hemp nettle

Large Flowered Hemp Nettle (Galeopsis speciosa) is very hairy plant (flowers included) with sort of toothed leaves narrowing to a long point at tip. Lowest lobe of flower is usually purple as in above picture and not notched. This annual herbaceous plants of the Lamiaceae family is locally known as šupljozub, which translates as Decayed Tooth. Hemp-nettle blossom flowers in Gorski kotar from July to September, between 400 and 1400m, most often to be found next to shrubs alongside mountain creeks. Opposite to sweet (and sexy) appearance, however, the plant is considered to be poisonous ie. may cause paralysis
