My first attempt of Gray's Peak was from Chihuahua Gulch TH. in 2000. I thought this was a really cool option for climbing Gray's if you wanted something less crowded. You most likely won't see anybody until you reach the party on the summit. It also requires a bit of route finding, unlike the standard Stevens Gulch route. I never made it to the summit back in 2000, the knee was in bad shape. I went back in the fall of 2001. I thought Stevens Gulch was pretty, especially in fall. I drove my Toyota Camry to the TH and screwed up my suspension. The Bakersville road is not really for low clearance cars.

The temperatures were increasing so I decided to start another season of climbing fourteeners. I picked Grays and Torres as my first of the season. I was already feeling in pretty good shape after doing Humphreys Peak (12,600’) in Arizona that had 3,200 feet of elevation gain.

I reached the trailhead at 7:30 and off I went. There was no wind and the temperatures must have been in the low forties. In other words it was perfect hiking weather. Looking up at the two peaks they were still covered in snow and where the climb really begins it was nothing but snow all the way to the top. I chose to do Grays first then Torres. The trail to the top was a straight shot and wasn’t too bad. The snow at this time was in great condition and after 2 ½ hours from the trailhead I was at the top of Grays.

Did this with Z and Mark Timmerman. Traversed over from Torreys. Having goten a late start, we had a resultingly late summit. The weather was great, though. I think that by the time we left the summit (we probably stayed on top a good hour or 2), it was probably 17.00 or 17.30. We had the strange experience of having a Flight for Life helicopter fly right over us (seen like he was in a big hurry) right at the summit! Great weekend.

Combo with Torreys via Horseshoe Basin. Wow, the tourists.

I've climbed this one four or five times, usually along with Torreys. The most memorable was a trip during a freak storm that was dropping enough snow to cause widespread sluffing and rockfall on McClellan Mountain. We probably should have turned around.

I have climbed Grays twice, once up Steven's Gulch and once from Horseshoe Basin. Although Horseshoe Basin is the more direct shorter steeper route, you will miss the wonderful wildflowers of Steven's Gulch. Pick a wet year to do the Gulch trail and you won't be dissappointed.

Beautiful late October climb! Great conditions - snowshoes, enough to ski descend on the east side of Grays for sure

The biggest hazard IS getting bitten by a dog! Plenty of people.

Great hike. It was little windy and cold on the summit. I couldn't drive over the big rutted section of the road with my Saturn SL2, so that added an extra 1.5 miles each way. I tried to bring the wife and dog with me on this one, but they turned back where the tundra gives way to rock. For more details see my trip report. It was a nice hike with a great view. The coolest thing was that we got really close to some mountain goats. It was also my brother's first 14er.

What a fun climb! My 3rd 14er (4th-Torreys), hiked with my compadre Anderonious. Easier climb than Bierstadt or Quandary, but still challenging for a relative newcomer like myself. Hiked on a Monday and had 1/2 hour time alone on the summit, and over an hour on Torreys (great weather for a September day!). The views on these peaks are the best I've seen yet; when i'm at the top I just can't figure which is the best direction to look. We could see Evans, Bierstadt, Longs, the Lincoln group, and Pikes, probably more if we knew what to look for. Anyway, highly recommended!

Crowded but very easy trail. Climbed both peaks in about 4 hours, including 44 minutes from Grays to the Stevens Gulch trailhead. Saw a woman running uphill near the Kelso Ridge turnoff and again near the same spot 3 hours later as I came down, as she started her second lap up Grays-Torreys.

I had just moved to Colorado 2 weeks prior and wanted to get out for a little exercise and altitude. Fun walk up the trail and then over to Torrey's. Dead Dog Couloir looks like a great climb in late Spring -- will have to come back!

I agree with Darrin below. After the class 4 scramble up Kelso to Torreys, Grays is pretty easy. Had to bag it while I'm here though since I'm not a CO resident. I'm not as cynical about the crowd on Grays. Met some really cool people. A nice lady named Tracy from Littleton hiked down with me and took the time to explain all about the wildflowers along the way. Saw a beautiful mountain goat. Had some light snow flurries fall from clear and sunny skies. Awesome day in the mountains.

Summitted at 13:15, sixth solo 14'er in 4 days.
