Green River from the White Rim

Green River from the White Rim

A clear morning following a stormy night in Canyonlands; this view is from the White Rim. A 4wd road tours the White Rim for nearly 100 miles, accessing remote, spectacular locations, many of which are only glimpsed (and many more of which are not seen at all) from the paved roads high above in the Island in the Sky District. This morning provided a fine illustration of what can happen very quickly in the desert when it rains. I spent the night on the White Rim as part of a trip driving the route clockwise. Thunderstorms during the night cooled things off and created a great atmosphere, and there were many scenic pools the next morning. But when I reached Upheaval Wash, not far from the park boundary, I found the normally dry wash to be a muddy torrent too swift and deep to cross by vehicle. I had to turn around and drive almost 100 rocky miles to reach pavement again. That's also a good reason to make sure you fill the tank at the nearest gas station before heading off-road. An Awesome Spectacle

White Rim Trail is an awesome spectacle. I just returned from my second trip partway around its eastern side. I hope one day to make the entire trip, along with a few of the choicer side hikes along the way. This photo provides sage advice: Carry plenty of gas! --mark d.

Re: An Awesome Spectacle

Thanks, Mark! One day I'd like to get back and complete the loop; it was maddening to get so close and have to go back due to the flooding. I considered waiting it out, but it likely would have taken several hours at least, and I needed to get to SW Colorado that day; as it was, I arrived right before sunset.

Re: An Awesome Spectacle

I did the White Rim Trail loop last week, Bob. Spent three wonderful days on it. Still, that wasn't enough time to drive and hike the many trails in the area. If you ever do decide to return and try to complete the loop and need a partner, let me know--I'm ready to go again at the drop of a hat! --mark d.

Re: An Awesome Spectacle

I'm glad to hear you had a great trip there, Mark. I will keep your offer in mind if I ever go back. And if I do, I think I'll go the other way this time so I can start with what I didn't get to see before!
