I had no real intention of making this climb, I took the teleferico to 3950 metres with the intention of taking it easy and maybe only going to one of the view points. Made it to the summit in 3 hours, complete mist at the summit but still worth it. The scramble to the top on the west side was very reminiscent of Pen-y-ghent in the Yorkshire Dales, UK. If you had the time, it would be worth doing all 3 summits.

Took the first teleferiQo at 9am to the top, then hiked up to Rucu (2.5hrs, easy). I continued on to GuaGua while Yaz, my hiking partner, descended. Reached the summit of GuaGua at 2:15pm, the last section before the top was very steep on loose scree. No views, summits shrouded in cloud. Descended by the same route to the teleferiQo, only bypassing Rucu's summit on the way down. Got caught in a torrential downpour, so ended up running quite a bit, I reached the teleferiQo at 5pm. From the bottom of the teleferiQo I walked a further 20mins to the highway & took a taxi into the centre of Quito for just $3.50.

Started this solo, but tagged along with other climbers on the way. Avoided ascending the scree by scrambling up a route to the left of the scree.

The Pichincha massif looks very impressive wrapping around the valley of Quito. Nice hike most of the way, with a bit of scrambling the last 2-300 feet. Nice acclimatization climb.

We hiked up from the Teleférico at 1145, a bit of a late start. Cloudy with patches of sun. We started on the rock a few hundred feet past the first cave on the left, and gained the ridge very early, at which point the fog was preventing visibility past 15'. Some interesting routefinding challenges, but we made it up by 2:30, and descended via the standard route with some snow. Great time!

Excellent Ruca climb with my best girl Beth. On that last part of the summit bid we were joined by a troup of Ecuadorian Special Forces. They included us in their celebration and photos.

Clear day. Could see all the way to Chimborazo. Got to the top of Rucu starting from the cable car in a hour and 45, and then continued down, climbed another peak before getting to padre encantado. Around 6 1/2 hours total.

dielotrRucu with acclimatization  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 24, 2013
Solo climb of Rucu from Teleferiq'o. A world of difference since the first time I climbed in January, when I only had a week of acclimatization. Now that I've lived in Quito for four months, Rucu was a breeze. Clearest day I've seen in Ecuador, as well! Snapped photos of Quito, Cotopaxi, Antisana, Cayambe, Ilinizas, Ruminahui, Corazon, Guagua and Padre Encantado, and even Chimborazo- 120 miles away.

A warm-up for Chris on basically her second day in Ecuador. The snowy conditions at the summit made for a bit of sketch. Running to make the teleferico was quite the rush.

Drove to Lloa with Sebastian and hired a 4x4 to get us up the road. They turned around far from the parking area, which made the total elevation gain for the day over 3,000 feet. We got to the summit fairly quickly where we were met with snow and wind. The crater looked amazing with the blowing snow.

Climbed Rucu Pichincha by Teleferiqo normal route. Skipped Paso de la Muerte. Cloudy near summit but fantastic views on the way up! Really feeling the effects of altitude- only 1 week of adjustment.

(Guagua Pichincha) We hired a guide in Quito and started the climb from Lloa. The drive was terrible! The car just couldn't make it to the trailhead but the couple extra miles didn't hurt us. There was no view at the summit but the experience was great. Make sure you go to both summits! I am from low altitude and climbed this on my 3rd day in Ecuador without problem.
