After arriving in CO on the 5th and booking it to the San Juans, we made a quick ascent of Handies Peak on the 6th of July. The hike was very enjoyable, and Sloan Lake was still frozen over! Views were the best of any peak i have ever stoop on top of.

What a wonderful, mostly sunny and quiet day to go on a long hike! For the most part, Grouse Gulch and American Basin trails stick to south facing slopes and were generally snow-free. Nothing but peaks as far as the eye can see!

Celebrated 14er #50 for Jim and Karen with a nice loop hike. Went up Grizzly Gulch, traversed over to Whitecross and bushwacked down to the Cinnamon Pass Rd from Whitecross. American Basin side has better views.

Great sunrise over Redcloud Peak on the hike up through Grizzly Gulch. Cold and windy on top, but some of the best views I've seen from a summit!

#50!!!!! We had a fun celebration on the summit- great friends (thanks Kevin & Jeremy!), specially made t-shirts, mardi-gras beads, sparkling white grape juice in CO shot glasses, gummy bears, and a "50 bouquet!" It is SOOOO nice to finally be there! Loop hiked up Grizzly Gulch and down American Basin.

I summited this twice in two days, and from both trailheads. I Backpacked up and over from Grizzly Gulch and then spent the night at Sloan Lake. The next day I hiked down to the American Basin 4wd trailhead before breaking camp and re-summiting with my lightened pack. I enjoyed both routes.

Climbed Uncompahgre, Handies, and Wetterhorn on consecutive days from our Silver Spur Motel "base camp" in Lake City. The San Juans are amazing! Recommend high clearance 4wd for road to American Basin.

Climbed this peak as part of my Hardrock 100 pacing duties. Started at the base of Grouse Gulch, climbed up and over into American Basin, up the South ridge, then down into Grizzly Gulch. A decent amount of snow still clinging to American Basin, the Grizzly Gulch side was mostly snow free, beautiful sunrise.

American Basin was beautiful. Camped the night there and was on trail just before 5am. Made the summit about 7am and was down just past 8am. Wonderful hike.

Gorgeous valley! Nice leisurely day. Glad we got an early start as clouds and distant thunder started at 11a.

My wife, Mrs. Rat, and I climbed this great route back in 1980. Hard to imagine a more beautiful high route in Colorado. There was much less traffic in this country a couple of decades ago!

Loved it. Not enough time up there...up in down in 2.5 hours due to storms.

This was my first climb of Handies. It was from American Basin. Second American Basin climb was on Jun 20, 1997, when we cooked T-bone steaks on the grill at our campsite.
