Hell For Sure Pass

Hell For Sure Pass

My older brother Mike chugs up Hell For Sure's final switchbacks like a rusty beater car with tapping valves and creaking knees. The eastern approach to Hell For Sure Pass(an old sheepherder's trail) is not physically difficult; it's more mental, because it wanders up into upper Goddard Canyon and then cuts back and meanders up and down, until it finally makes a steep ascent up to the base of Red Mountain. The descent into Red Mountain Basin and Hell For Sure Lake is short and beautiful. We saw nobody for 6 days. The ridge in the background is Davis Lakes Basin with Mt. McGee on the right. Goddard Canyon is below. Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP. Sierra Nevada, California, USA. August 2006.
