Date Climbed: Dec 9, 2006

I visited High Point during a business trip to CT. Thankfully, the park was open and I could drive up to the monument as I was suffering from the flu. It was a beautiful crisp, clear December morning, and I was the only one there. This is my 17th state highpoint.

Here late in the day on a rainy afternoon. No one at top but me. Fencing and construction, but I walked around to the top anyway.

The snow was fresh, deep and i wanted to try cross country skiing so played hookie from work and took some lessons, got rentals at the center, did the swamp loop then headed for the monument. What a beautiful day with crisp skies of blue against the snow.

Ok views (pretty drizzly), but lovely spring in North Jersey. Surprised to see very few people around.

After spending a frigid night at Sawmill Pond Campground I drove the the trailhide and hiked up. Very pleasant and only encountered a few people on the trail, but I was alone on the summit. Amazing views...and a very big monument tower that is too big for the mountain.

The highpoint of New Jersey is in the High Point State Park in the far North-West corner of the state, just a few miles from Port Jervis, NY. It's an easy drive from New York City, but it's just far enough out that as you get within 30 miles or so of the park, the slums have given way to suburbs and the suburbs have given way to rolling hills with pretty fields, farms and forests.

I arrived at the end of September and the road was lined with farmer's stands selling pumpkins and chrysanthemums; the weather was a perfect warm autumnal afternoon and the view from New Jersey's highest point was lovely. Hawks soared in the sky over the valley and the leaves were just showing a hint of color.

The park entrance is on the right of Rt 23 North, and a paved road leads from the entrance all the way up to the 200-foot mini-Washington Monument with parking at the foot.

Directions to High Point, NJ from the the NYC area (east/south)

From the South: Take I-287 to Rt 23 North

From the GW Bridge: Take I-80 West to Rt 23 North

Follow Rt 23 North High Point State Park

~ 7 miles north of Sussex, NJ

~ 3 miles north of Colesville, NJ

The road goes directly up to the monument at the summit with parking just below

I have lived in Jersey for 18 years and been hiking in Jersey for at least 10 years, this was the first time that I hiked to the state's high point. I drove up once in the winter about 12 years ago but to me, that did not count. The day was very clear. I could see the Catskills, and the Delaware Water Gap.

Enjoyed High Point. Nice views I didn't think possible in NJ. Clear morning for the most part, but it was TOO hot!

The second time I went to High Point was 10/31/08. It was days after a rare October snowstorm hit the State. I made a trip report about it

This is a nice little mountain for being in New Jersey. It's got great views all around. Very windy most times that I've been there. They say you can see NYC on a clear day, but I've never seen it from here myself.

Fitting for New Jersey that it should have a giant concrete monument on its highest point. And that is in a constant state of repair. I've been at the summit maybe over 10 times and I've yet to climb the momument cause its always closed for some reason.
