Yeah, me too. We've thought about it over the last couple of years. Although I have a lot of vacation time, it's hard for me to get two weeks off in a row. We need two weeks to go that far north because it is almost a three day drive up there. It's still on the list though.
A group of 4 of us just climbed this October 6, 2013. There was a fair amount of snow after about 6500ft. The steep slab area was a little precarious but doable with crampons and micro-spikes. I think with proper gear and good stamina one could do this in the early winter or late Spring with some great winter scenes to be enjoyed. We camped at the lower lake, which is a great place for a base camp with water and firewood.
The north ridge is a great alternative to the south. It is more difficult and exposed(Class IV). There is an access couloir on the north saddle above upper rumble lake. You can also do a traverse from Cooney mt to Holland, which is very enjoyable but 4th class with an exposed 5th step and a longer day.
