cabFrom AZ Snow Bowl  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jan 11, 2014

This was a winter ascent, but due to it being a low snow year, we only needed boots and poles to get to the summit.

We started off following the summer trail from the Snow Bowl ski resort, but missed a switchback (even though the trail had a good boot pack) when we reached a wide, obvious old avalanche chute that we went out to investigate. We ended up going straight up the chute hopping from rock to rock to avoid postholing and came upon the 1944 B-24 airplane wreck that was an interesting find. We continued straight up the slope above treeline to the summit ridge and followed that north to the summit.

On the descent, we followed the ridge to the low saddle with Agassiz and followed the boot packed trail down to the trailhead.

Wonderful hike to the top of Arizona. At 9.30am I was all alone on the summit. Endless views... of just nothing. Gorgeous!

Summited with my two daughters (No. 9) and high school running buddy. A nice day to climb, and the ascent was ok. Reached the top mid morning, just ahead of the first thunder. Descent very hard due to rocks and roots all the way, but only light intermittent rain. We met a woman who climbs this mountain every week (wow). This was the first on a five state highpoint trip which also included 12 national parks plus Mount Rushmore.

It wasn't a storm scare, but a major storm and every other hiker turned back. It was the poorest decision you've made while hiking with us on a trip. You shouldn't have been hiking in the first place. Very bad decision making sir, and i had to call you out in this forum!

State HP #29 - Apparently, it is monsoon season in northern Arizona in August/September. This was our second try at Humphrey's Peak, as just a few days earlier, we were turned back by lightening .75 miles and 500 feet below the summit. On that 1st try, my friend decided to go forward and summit in the heavy rain/storm clouds, against better judgement, while we turned back. Fast forward to Sept 3rd, the weather was much nicer, and we started out very early. My gf and I hiked quickly, making record time up a trail, and were successful! Very pretty country in northern AZ, and could see the Grand Canyon from the summit too!

My wife and I, along with my 16 month old daughter, made it to the summit. It was a great hike. Took us 4 hours to summit and once we got to the top...a storm passed over and had to book it to the saddle. We were told by a native hiker of Humphrey's, that he thinks our daughter was the youngest to summit...would like to see if that is true. As we were coming down we met a man that was 77 years old, he was determined to summit for the last time in his life. Might the youngest and the oldest summit the same day?!

After a week of hiking on a bum leg the ascent was fine. A little storm scare on the last mile, but not enough to turn me back. The decent however on an injured leg took me 3x as long as it should. almost 6 hours in the rain.

Great Labor Day hike. Slept in the Snow Bowl parking lot, and started the hike at 4:15am. Got to the saddle between Agassiz and Humphrey's right when the sun was about to rise. Tried to make it to the summit before sunrise, but was about 10 minutes behind. I made it to the summit in 1 hour 52 minutes. My dog Niko made it with me. His first state highpoint. Hopefully many more to come for him.

This was a really enjoyable climb. I felt confident and safe. I kept *my* pace, which is a newly-learned lesson i'll use from now on.

Headed out to the trailhead from Grand Canyon the night before and slept at the trailhead, got an early start at around 7am, was up and back to my car by 1030. Saw a line of people heading up around 10, glad I started early. Fun hike, lots of uphill. Would like to see what a winter ascent would be like.

Enjoyed hiking the Weatherford Trail, well maintained, thanks a million. Spent 6 hours round trip a little more up a little less down. Spectacular 360 view from the summit. As always this climb was dedicated to A.W. who was KIA during GWOT. Adios

RuvichaEscape from the Heat  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 6, 2013

Climbed at the onset of a major heat wave so it was a moderate 69 degrees at the summit with no risk of storms or Humphreys' vaunted winds. We went up on a weekday, encountering a number of groups and solo hikers but no big crowds. The first 3/4 of the hike climbs through forest. The whole trail is well-maintained but we and other hikers that day (both young and old) still found the climb long and strenuous. The last mile involves some minor scrambling on sections above the saddle and treeline. The summit affords fine views but the occasion was diminished by clouds of gnats that swarmed you the minute you stood still. Couldn't agree more with HP#9 about Flagstaff.

A pretty dull hike, and not worth the nearly 300 mile drive to it. All trail, hot and dusty. Crowded even on an early Thursday morning.

Date Climbed: Mar 19, 2013

A good day climb reserved for winter. About 2-3hrs hike to an extended crater ridgeline offering top of the world views of Arizona, Painted desert, and Grand canyon. The drive north of Flagstaff is short and picturesque, winding through an aspen forrest ending at the upper lodge of the ski resort. Wind might be a factor but there wasn't any. Post holing was mainly through high alpine forest; we were on the hunt for the downed aircraft. Enjoy!
