Old Chute and Pearly Gates

Old Chute and Pearly Gates

One climber is on the Hogsback, and you can see the bergshrund opening up 25m in front of him. Two are making the traverse toward the "Old (West) Chute," and another is near the top of the Old Chute, left. The chute that's about 75m right of the Hogsback is the Pearly Gates, the standard route before the Hogsback shifted so far to the left (west). The Pearly Gates would have been a suicidal mixed rock-ice climb on such a warm day. I was concerned by all of the ice trails across the traverse, and was happy to discover the safer way through the fumaroles. June 30, 2008
