Široka peč

Široka peč (Fat Crag) is a difficult mountain to climb, especially its northern wall, seen on this picture.

This picture (taken from Jasenje meadow, above Martuljek) is interesting also because some passages can be seen. Left of the northern wall, a broad, rugged ravine and higher snowfields lead into the closed Amfiteater basin. Clearly is seen a rocky step which requires UIAA III climbing to reach Amfiteater basin. Above the snow fields of lower Amfiteater the summit of Škrnatarica is seen. Interesting is the steep snowfield (ramp and couloir), leading on the ridge right of the summit.

Interesting is also the situation right of the Široka peč northern wall. Broad snow fields are coming up from 3 larches (not any more seen on this picture). Then the snow fields are branching. The left ones are leading into Jug's couloir (not seen, behind the wall), leading almost on the summit of Dovški Križ. The right (or straight) snowfields are leading below the broad Grlo saddle. It can be reached by easy climbing (UIAA I) and is offering either a passage to Vrata valley, either the ascent possibility on Veliki Oltar.

Dear Oswaldo,

I'm so happy that you are interested in more detailed picture. I replaced the old one with the original. But when I click the "VIEW HIGH-RESOLUTION IMAGE" it still does not give me the original resolution. I think this is some kind of a mistake in the program (or perhaps it will come later, when pictures are refreshed on server).

I know that as a great climber you will be inspecting also the northern wall of Široka peč. There are some difficult routes. So, if you wish to have the real original on your computer, just let me know and I will send this picture to you by e-mail.

Otherwise, on SummitPost I will continue publishing a bit smaller resolution pictures. So, if you are interested for any original, just let me know and I will send it.

I know that previously Matt had limited the horizontal resolution of the pics, so that the panos were hardly visible even in high resolution.
Afterwards, to bypass this problem, he left only the limit of 1000 pixels to the vertical resolution, so that the high resolution dimensions of this your pic are only 1500x1000 pixels and don't correspond to the original dimensions.
As a conseguence of the limit of 1000 pixels to the vertical resolution, it can happen that the HR dimensions of the vertical (portrait) images are less than the dimensions of the image in the initial image-page.

Vi prendo sulla parola e ne approfitto: non capisco perché 4 foto sulla mia route sopracitata non si aprono più, mentre una volta lo facevano tranquillamente. Alle stesse ci tengo particolarmente, perché sono un ricordo di una vecchia ascensione con Emilio Bertona aka emilius. Purtroppo io non sono capace di farlo e se qualcuno di voi, BRIGANDS, mi può aiutare lo ringrazio brigantemente. Se é il caso ditemi se devo assegnare l'administrator od altro. Hello Osvaldo!

I got an answer from Matt Miller. He says the following:
"Unfortunately, those images are lost forever due to an error made a long time ago on how images files that are not JPG format were processed at one time. Those were BMP files. Any images other than JPG files were lost."

So, what comes to my mind is - if you still has those 4 photos, convert them from BMP format to JPG (I can do that for you if you send them to me via e-mail). And then please upload them again on that page. They are a precious testimony of fine climbs, done so many years ago.

Otherwise, we brigands (with hearts and wings) are more and more ready to visit you. When Silvia flies here to my place and picks me up, we shall take off and fly over there to pay you a visit in your mountain corner. Be ready!
