Re: you...I haven't but it's actually one of the best solutions to the problem of long access trails in the W Tatras - the night under the stars - as long as you can tell the weather patterns as well as having suitable sleeping gear

Yes, I agree with you, bivouac remains one of the best solution to take sunset/sunrise shots. I haven't slept directly under the stars but I pictched sometimes the little tent (not in Tatras, but in Pyrenees most of the time). I heard also sometimes about rocky shelters in tatras suitable for wild bivouac; I have found one by coincidence on Strbsky Stit, do you know any others ?

Re: you...Martin's - I just butted in :-) And I'm unfortunately sort of stuck in the city this fall. As to the shelters - no, I haven't used any in the Tatras though I've passed many (without paying much attention); again, you'd better ask the Slovaks. As for France, is it true that even in national parks in some places you're allowed to pitch a tent at night providing you take it down before 9 next morning?

Re: you...I didn´t sleep on Klin, but on Rackove sedlo/Raczkova przelecz. It was too windy that night on the summit. I know it´s illegal, but if you want to take photos like this... And it is also much safer to stay at night on the ridge than walk before sunrise through dark valley, through bear territory...
´Koliba pod Pustym´ is very nice and comfortable, but still more than an hour from the main ridge.

Re: you...Yes, in the Pyrenees I used to do it everywhere, even in Aygues Tortes or the french Parc of the Pyrenees. No one checks. I haven't heard of any sort of fine. But of course I haven't done it near the roads like the belgians or the dutchs :)
It is also officially allowed to pitch the tent in front of the official mountain hut, if you wish to eat dinner but avoid the cost of sleeping in it (much higher than in PL I must say :( )
But I'm more familiar with sleeping in places like Koliba Pod Pustym (http://www.summitpost.org/hut/campground/449784/koliba-pod-pustym.html), in Pyrenees there are thousands like this, so we don't even need a tent if we calculate well the way to hike a remote peak. The list of such places is here, this will give you an idea !

Re: you...Not so many such shelters in Tatras since it's forbidden to camp or bivouac or even stay(!) at night in National Park area(besides offical chalets of course). Lots of old sheperds' wooden shelters were ruined not only by time...on both sides of the mountains. I can understand and I am a big fan of all restrictions to mass tourism in Tatras, but there is too much hipocrisy...that's other discussion.
There are old rocky shelters almost everywhere in High Tatra valleys, as you hike wild places for years you know the localization of them. Some are really comfortable but most of them after years is in pretty bad state. I've got some favourite ones ;)

Re: you...I know the hut 'pod Klinom', it looks very well, but i did,t use it. Keys to these shelters ? Koliba pod Pustym is under the care of mountain club from village of Liptovska Kokava as I remember, I suppose they close the hut after summer season and one should ask them for keys etc. I slept there only once, great place.

Re: Slovak cabinsI know this link and that's how I know it is possible to sleep in it. When I passed it in 2006 it was opened and I had a look inside. It looked clean and comfortable, for sure a good place to sleep !
