Kedarnath Mountain

Kedarnath Mountain

Kedarnath mountain (6940m) stands directly behind Kedarnath Temple in the Garhwal Himalaya. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is a popular and easily accessible destination for pilgrims. The mountain is another matter. Its summit (6940m) is just left of the centre of the picture. The peak was first climbed in 1947 but the south face, shown here, wasn't climbed until 1988, by an Italian team. Even then, they avoided the upper rock wall, seen clearly on this picture. The face seems not to have had a direct ascent - unless someone knows better?
