I have a picture of the same sunset from down in the valley, no comparison. Thanks for sharing

It was pretty shocking to see in person. I wish I'd caught more of it, but all I had was an old digital camera and about 32Mb worth of chip.

Is this the result of inversion, pollution and fading sunlight?

The cloud was hovering over the Owens Valley, and these types of cloud are formed by the 'venturi' effect of the airflow being compressed and decompressed over the top of the Sierra Nevada, combined with very cold temps up high. The orange color may be due to pollution to the west (San Joaquin Valley has bad air!). It was just after sunset.

Was the wave followed by a change in weather? The last time I photographed a lenticular formation that big, I got stuck in the snowstorm that followed!

This was a LONG time ago, so I don't remember for sure. I think the weather just stayed clear and nice. Certainly could have been different further north.

Thanks much for the comment!
