If you ever find yourself in Marbella, dreaming of mountain, I can only recommend La Concha. A wonderful limestone summit, directly above town with nice views and a wonderful, somewhat exposed traverse from the east.
Route Climbed: Istan route NW ridge Date Climbed: August 1998
I started so early in the morning that it was dark and I had some route finding problems. Once on the ridge it become easier to follow my way up. At 10 a.m. I was on the upper part of the ridge when the sun began to hit. Lukily, from there it is a couple of minutes to the open summit.
After some drinking and eating I began the descend without waiting too much for the hottest hours of the day. Half way down I runned out of water. Lukily, Istán village has a precious source of fresh water running out of the 'sierras' and through the village.
Nov. 30 2005. Istán route new path (not really the ridge).
I did the way up in 2 hours and 20 minutes, not really trying to go quickly. I went up alone. The weather was not very good. The summit was in the clouds comming from the east and it was very windy. A couple of times I had to grip something not to loose equilibrity on the wide ridge. I stayed 5 seconds on the top and I runned back down. The wet rocks on the ridge can be tricky wen wet and I fell two times! Nothing bad but a stupid feeling. Descending a little bit and the weather got better.
