Labeled Schöneck ridge

Labeled Schöneck ridge

To read the labels, click on the image for a large version. This long ridge stretches to the southwest from the Tschenglser Hochwand (outside this image on the right). For reasons I can only guess, two rather insignificant 'summits' actually have a name: Vorderes Schöneck (2908m) and Hinteres Schöneck (3128m). The last one even has a cross! But although these are not exactly independent summits, they are nice viewpoints. It looks too steep for it, but from the Düsseldorfer Hütte, a strenuous hiking trail leads up to Hinteres Schöneck (with some steel cables along the steepest parts) and then follows the ridge down, to Sulden eventually. This is part of South Tyrol, a region in northern Italy where German is the main language. In the image I've given the German names in black/white, the Italian ones in blue. 29 Aug 2014.
