The same effect seen by Whymper on the Hornli ridge during the first ascent of the Matterhorn on July 1865.

Indeed Whympers crosses apparation or fog bow is thought to have been a Brocken Spectre though Peter Taugwalder denied the existence of the crosses at the time.
Perhaps a bit of poetic licence on the part of Whymper?
