4/30/2009 Started at the winter parking area at mile 48.6 on the MLH. Unfortunately the gate was still closed even though the road was bare as far as I could see. Walked the road until the 343/120 turnoff. That road was also bare. Turned off on 120 (snowy) which I followed until its end. Traversed over to the Boundary Creek drainage which I followed until the base of 10897. Up to this point I was able to float on top of the snow even without snowshoes but once I started climbing 10897 I had to put them on. From the top of 10897 I followed the north ridge of Lamotte all the way to the summit. It was very windy on the summit ridge, but it was a pretty warm day. Still, I had to keep the big bulky mittens on and it was very time consuming to take pictures. There are fantastic views in all directions once on the ridge. The whole thing was 23.5 miles RT. I started at 6, got to the summit at 1:40 and was back at the car at 8:40. I was expecting miserably soft snow on the return, but it never got too bad. For sure it was soft and mushy, but I still managed to stay on top with the snowshoes, thanks to the good refreeze the night before. The bottom part took a lot longer on the way down than on the way up because of the soft snow.
10/2/2008 West couloir
9/4/2008 With Moogie737 and Brent. Up and down the west couloir.
8/15/2008 Beautiful hike. Great views but unfortunately I forgot my camera. Started at the Christmas Meadows TH and stayed on the trail until due west of the summit. Left the trail at about N40 46.370 W110 46.316 Headed for the couloir located at N40 46.191 W110 45.861 For the most part, the rock in this couloir is nice and stable in convenient step sized chunks. However, it gets less so as you near the top and I was eventually pretty much on all 4's, but still, it's not so bad. The 4.25 miles/1300' vertical on the trail took 1:50 and the 1.15 miles/2600' vertical off-trail took 1:40. On the way back, I took the ridge N until shortly before 11783 and then headed NW, then N, then W to get back to the trail about .6 miles from the TH. The whole thing took 6.5 hours and was about 10.25 miles.
7/24/2007 With Dave A. Went up as above, but on the way down we followed the ridge all the way to Scow Lake and then did some little peaks NW of Scow, 10381, 10376, and 10356 before bushwhacking down to the road. |
