Routefinding exam  Sucess!

Last year I did this route tracking the normal line that trends west, but did want to go up a more direct line which I've heard other people do. Attempted the route a few times before and ran into tricky parts, namely a big chockstone at around 9000 ft. But you can get around it. All about routefinding, look for detour scrambles up the side (usually west-trending), if you choose the right lines, you can keep it class 4 (maybe one class 5 move) all the way up, much easier. Of course 'easy' is very relative for a hike that goes up almost a vertical mile in about 2.5 miles. But I was pleased to see that I didn't have to do any 'hold for my life' moves to get up this. And worst case scenario you can backtrack and down climb from half-way up, a short length of rope would help in one or two spots if you did that.

Fun in late autumn  Sucess!

I did 3 short hikes in the area to get familiar with the routefinding and explored some of the other chutes where water runs down, I bet some of the more direct ones would be approachable. But last weekend I followed this route directly. As long as you follow the left most chutes, it's actually pretty easy going. The steepness doesn't bother you as much as you'd think, only took a little over 2 hours to get to the ridge. Once on the ridge, it was slower going as there was a foot or two of snow along most of the north side of the ridge, and with the south side being snow-free but pretty steep, lots of post-holing. About 3.5 hours to get to the peaks, even deeper snow at the very top. Went down Broads Fork main route.

The 5.7 crux might be something you run into if you go up the chute that runs parallel to the left-most. Obvious water line as shown on Alltrails, splitting at 1 mile in at 8,500 ft elevation. I tried that one on an early attempt and did run into a big chockstone. Sticking to the left chute bypasses this.

Lisa falls direct   Sucess!

Gave it a go 8/9/2020 after years of trying to find more beta on it with no luck. Followed the route description on here which definitely helped. You should really start trending toward the left tributary at 7600’ when the canyon is wide. As mentioned above, we also either missed or climbed thru the 5.7 crux without difficulty. Is it possible that the crux listed is actually in a different tributary than the one outline on the route page? I’m not sure. It gets confusing up there with so many different chutes. Once the quartzite is reached, the rock becomes dreadfully loose until you gain the ridge. Overall, a highly overlooked and extremely long scramble that I’m suprised does not see any traffic. The waterfall sections down low are stunning with amazing granite scrambling. Good level of commitment on this one, turning around halfway up would really suck.

Brutally steep  Sucess!

This route is steep. Mostly class 3 with some class 4 and easy class 5 sprinkled in. This would be a very difficult downclimb. I would not recommend it as a descent path. I'm a fast hiker and this route took me nearly 4 hours due to the physical demands and the tricky route finding. Other than that, it's an absolutely stunning route.

Lisa Falls  Sucess!

Encountered a few drunken climbers/campers at Lisa Falls early Sunday morning. The route description on Summitpost was pretty good. I had a few minor detours but overall I was able to follow everything. I missed the ~5.7 crux or simply got through it without much difficult? Made it up to Broad Fork West Twin and then actually did the Cottonwood Traverse all the way to Monte Cristo/Mt Superior and descended to Cardiaff Pass/Alta. It was good starting at Lisa Falls because since I was solo I just rode my bike down Little Cottonwood Canyon to my car.
