This poor little guy looks lonely and scared! Is he really sitting on his ass?!

Little they may be, but they're tough little buggers these guys. It's sitting outside its nest in a scree slope in Bjørndalen and from the looks of things (lack of big bulging cheeks) has fed its chicks or hasn't had a recent feed from the icy cold fjord.

But lonely, yes - this shot was taken right at the end of the little auks' short summer season when most of its friends, who had spent much time circling in large flocks above these slopes or collecting food out in the fjord, have already started the long journey south to Greenland.
