Mönch northeast-face

Mönch northeast-face

Sahara sand, that comes over with high winds from Africa is a climate phenomena of this year especially in the Alps. The sand has a red colour and makes the snow sticky. Walking with crampons produces snowballs under your feet even having plates against that attached. Sahara sand can be seen in the lower left part of the picture. Berglihütte (3299m) is located on the rocky spur in the lower center of the image. It was once upon a time ago an important place for ascents to Mönch or Jungfrau, but has lost it's function since the underground to Jungfraujoch-station had been built.
