Centered in the pic is the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo, built by Juan de Herrera in the 16th Century. After winning the Battle of Saint Quentin on August 10th, 1557, (Saint Lawrence’s day), and as a way of thanking God for his victory, Felipe II started construction on the San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
