Thank you! I saw this mushroom and thought it was intereseting. I love to stop along the trail for such things, it's always worth the time.

This looks like it might be an Amanita, perhaps a yellow variety of A. Muscaria (such as var. Formosa). Many amanitas are extremely lethal; others (including Muscaria) are survivable if only small fragments are eaten; a few are edible; and for many toxicity is unknown. Personally I'd only touch it with a stick, then I'd throw the stick away.
