Cascade ScramblerEasy hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 24, 2010

Cascade Scrambler

This is an easy, laid back hike. The first time Rainier pops out, it feels as if you can almost reach out and touch it. My personal opinion is that the scramble up the summit block from the standard route is overhyped. Also, do yourself a favor and park on FS9020, unless you're using this for conditioning.

Happy to say that I actually summited this peak. I'm not the best scrambler in the world but I mastered this one. No lose rocks and the handholds and footholds are there. It is just that one short section that is the real challenge. Just don't make a mistake!!!!

Scrambling up is always funner than down.
Very few people on the trail for an I-90 corridor hike.

climbed it many times with friends and even the Boy Scouts, all in winter. We had good weather which made it nice. Actually, we were lucky.

Nice trail with a good scramble to keep it interesting. Good training day hike. Too bad it was so cloudy that day.

... the final summit block took me by surprise. I would have been more comfortable if I had not been solo, but I persevered. One small slip, and I would have been a goner. The trail, however, was awesome. I loved seeing the old-growth trees; some of the largest I have ever seen in Washington are on this mountain. There was a small family of mountain goats (one mother, three babies) at the summit, which darted away before I could take a photo of them. Some fresh cougar tracks were near the summit, as well.

Nice trainig climb with a fun scramble section at the top. Nothing much scarrier than Si for example, but a bit more exposed.

Hiked this on a really clear Pacific Northwest day in the late afternoon. The view off the top of the butte provided a strikingly good look down on I90.

Good training hike, though nothing extraordinary about the hike itself. The scramble at the top definitely got my attention! Though technically quite easy (class 2-3), the exposure is pretty significant. It took me a few moments to gather my courage and get to the top. Great views on a mostly clear day! I saw Baker, Glacier, Stuart, Rainier & Adams!

Good to be back. This was an unofficial OSAT trip. There were about 8 of us in our group and a total of 21 people and 4 dogs on the summit.

The drive is a little longer than for Mt. Si, but it is worth it because it is a longer hike with fewer people.

Great day hike with good views. The scramble at the end gets you clear of the trees for good views.

All around a good hike. There were lots of mosquitos, and even in late July there was more snow then I planned on, making the last little bit quite fun, but otherwise good. The weather was great, the scramble was fun and not too hard, though I agree there is some definite exposure. Also saw several Pileated Woodpeckers, probably the most I've ever seen in one place. No mtn goats though sadly.
