Me on the summit of St.Helens...

Me on the summit of St.Helens about 1970, after climbing the Forsythe Glacier route with the Seattle Mountaineers. Mt. Rainier in the background. The wood and wire is from an old fire lookout or so I was told. Mt. Hood had an old wood lookout at one time too. Just thouht some one might enjoy some history of the mountain.

Always nice to

see those old pics! I see you are from Ferndale. My mom was born there in '25 and my grandfather owned the drugstore from the teens to the fifties. I love the area.

Best regards,

Don

Don:

I just spotted your comments. That picture on St. Helens was a few years ago. I see you own Whitehorse. I have tried it twice, can you believe it. Once from the trail you list, but my son and I started way to late, got past the the Pass, but decided not to come out in the dark , so we quit. Two years later we decide to go the glacier, what a brush job! My friends will never forgive me, we turned back with couple thousand feet to go, started to late again. Now I'm mad and have to make it. This is a great spot for mountains close by without the crowds!

Re: Always nice to

Thanks for the note, Norman. Good to see I'm not the only one who had to bail on Whitehorse. I first saw it back in the mid 70's but didn't do a recon until about '98. Got stopped by snow in July below Lonetree Pass that first time. I went up with a girlfriend in '98 and again in '02, (I think) but had to turn back. Finally made a concerted effort in '03 but the summit icefield stopped me that time. I could not get up the slope with the warm temperatures and running shoes! Finally did it in July, 04. It's one tough mountain, due to the long traverse, bushwhack, and elevation. Trouble is, it looks so easy from the Darrington vantage point!.

Anytime you would like to tackle it, let me know, I'm game.

Best regards,

Don

Re: wood and wire

Some one must know the history here. I was only repeating what I was told about the lookout. Maybe if I get down there someday to the one of the Ranger stations, I can take the picture and ask. I am sure there must be old photos of the structure.

Re: wood and wire

In a pinch, sure they were helicoptered up there. But that was not the standard practice. There is a similar fire detector guardhouse on Mt. Pugh, just off the Mtn. Loop Highway. Its summit elevation is over 7,200' with really low basal approach. That was no big deal for Nels Bruggeth, the fire watchman assigned to the lookout. He'd descend Friday as the sun was setting, run into Darrington to meet his girlfriend for supper, then be back on duty in the lookout by sunrise! That was in the 1930's!

I was there in '77 but the remains of the lookout/donkey stable were still buried in the summit snows.

I said donkey stable because on neighboring Mt Adams there was one too. They mined sulphur and transported it down with donkeys. The same donkeys brought supplies to the miners huddled in the same frigid stable/ bunkhouse/ lookout, whatever.

I do not know if any sulphur was ever mined from the summit crater of St. Helens like it was on Adams. Both summits had the stable/bunkhouse/ lookouts though.
