Mono Lake May 26, 2013 A view from the shoreline of this dramatic area. Over time, rainfall at Mono Lake did not keep up with evaporation, and minerals in the water built up until the lake is now 2 1/2 times as salty and 80 times as alkaline as the ocean; so salty it doesn’t freeze.
