excellent sunny day. this trail gets steep before it hits the summit ridge. We descended the saddle between elbert and "south elbert." pretty steep loose scree; i don't really reccomend it, but the drainage you hike out is beautiful this way, and you can avoid any crowds (the black cloud trailhead doesn't appear to get much traffic anyway, though).

I started about an hour before dawn not to beat weather-- I hit the summit in less than 3 hrs.-- but to beat crowds; I counted over 90 people heading up as I went down. It was great to be atop the Rockies-- windy and bitterly cold, too. The perfect complement to this is a stop afterward at Wild Bill's in Leadville-- best burgers in Colorado.

I was staying at a cabin at Elbert' s base. I never had climbed a mountain before. I grabbed one of the kid's backpack and tried it. I made it solo in 3.5 hours. I am
now seriously hooked.

This was my second Colorado 14er and it was a great hike. When you live at sea level, it's hard to get used to the lack of O's.

This seemed easy for a flatlander. About 3 hours up. Not to many people, but it was September.

After 10 hours on Massive the day before this was much shorter. I took the easy route and left camera and anything else I could back at camp.

2nd 14'er. Good trail got a little steep around 13,000 feet, wouldn't want to come down in the rain

Great climb with what seemed like about 500 other people on a Sunday morning. Touched the top of Colorado in just under 3 hours and did the round trip back to the trailhead in 5 1/2 hours. Easy climb with a very good trail to the summit.

First 14er ever summited. Lots of fun, tried it without advil and got bad headache. I wanted to see how I reacted to altitude, and I found out...

First 14er hiked (no car/cablecar). Good maintained
trail, only the high altitude is a bit of a problem.

Started the trail around 5:30am with my brother. I didn't drive all the way up on the 4x4 trail. I wish I did... that 1.8 mile wasn't too much fun after I got down from the summit.
Total time = 7.5 hr
took me 5 hr to get to the top... the trail was easy, and I took my time. Great scene of Twin Lakes from the summit.
When I got to the summit, I can see dark clouds on the NW side... hmm.. it is a good sign to leave.
After 30 minutes, the sky start to snow/hail... it was pretty cool. But the roaring thunder make me walk even faster. It took me 1 hr to get to the treeline. It was a scary thought... Hopefully, other people were okay... because I saw a bunch of people and two dogs were still on the way up when the thunderstorm came in. Overall, it was a great trail and mountain.

Climbed together with one Danish and two American friends. My first ever climb....This was fantastic!!
We took 3hr to the top and 2hr down and I was quite sore in my legs on our way home to Denmark.
I will very much like to climb some more mountains...only problem though is that the highest point in Denmark is Ejer Bavnehoej, which is 561ft !!

Great Hike! I underestimated the endurance I would need for this Class 1 hike. I went with 3 others and one person got sick. We had just flown in the previous day from an elevation of about 30 feet. So we should have better acclimated ourselves. Beautiful day! The long trail ahead of us, was a bit disheartening and I felt a bit like saying, "Are we there yet?" My first 14er. Went and did Long's Peak two days later with no problems at all, and faster than Mount Elbert!
Oh and a 5 year old was on the summit of this mountain! Hiked the majority of it, with only a short piggy back ride she said.

This was my first climb over 7200' (high point in my home state of SD). We drove down through the night one friday night, climbed on a sunday morning and drove back the same night. A great first 14er!

July 2004- Easy hike, trail was very worn down.
March 2007- First 14ers.com gathering ever! Great time with an awesome group of people, winds above 13,000' were great training for Orizaba.
December 2013- First mountain after returning from a half-year in South America. I struggled with the altitude, but really blazed the final 1000' vertical. Where did that come from?
January 2014- Sarah's winter 14er finisher! Awesome day with a 2-hr summit party! I'll skip coming back up here in February this year. :P

After spending 5 days traveling through Colorado`s high country, I decided to climb my first Colorado fourteener. Did it in 3:35 whithout problems thanks to good weather and a well worn path. The views from the summit were great specially towards La Plata peak; after a 30 minute break on the top I headed back down and climbed Mt Massive in the afternoon.
