Climbed up a decent trail hoping to glissade the Angel. Interesting day. It's supposed to be the first weekend of the summer and we couldn't even see our hands in front of our faces!! Snow! What a riot. And the WIND! WHOOEY! It was a doozy! The weather was so nasty that we didn't do Tabaguache, which is a REAL kick in the shorts...there's no way to get up there without going over Shavano first, unless you go for miles and miles into Brown's Creek, but that's a story for another day...

I climbed the Angel snowfield with my brother Brent. It snowed on us for 15 minutes on the way down. The Angel makes for a great glissade.

This was a cold, windy one in hunting season. An interesting (to me) momentary intersection of three lives happened on my descent, about which more here.

A gorgeous day and a wonderful climb. The glissade down was fast and fun. The only way to climb Shavano in my opinion. Didn't need crampons, but they would have made things easier

Turned into a long day with steady 25 mph winds, gusting to 50, driving snow/ice, and post holing once above 12,800'. Could not see Tabeguache from the summit. TR to come.

Perfect weather and snow conditions. 1800 ft glissade from summit to base of Angel. Snowshoes helpful on bushwack descent.

This hike was even better than I thought it would be. A thunderstrom came in and made us run down the mountain faster than we would have liked, but that's Colorado in the summer for ya! Great views of the Arkansas and San Luis valleys.

The first of many 14er summits for Erin and I during extraordinarily dry 2002. I took a nice scounting drive the weekend before, and being more or less a mountain newbie, I asked a local in Poncha Springs where Shavano was because I couldn't see anything that looked like the Angel on a nearby peak. The local laughed at me and said that it had been mostly melted out for over a month. We encountered no snow either above or below treeline during our hike. On the windy summit, we considered the traverse to Tabeguache, but we were out of shape, and wimped out. We bagged Tab a few weeks later.

My first 14er! Being a flatlander from the midwest I was at a bit of a disadvantage.....luckily I had spent the previous week in Moab mountain biking so I was somewhat acclimated to altitude. I huffed & puffed my way to the summit.....what a view!! Well worth the effort. I decided to save Tabeguache for another day and am glad I did since I ran out of water just a few hundred feet down from the summit. 100 ozs of aqua gone in just 5 hours! Round trip was 8 hours.....5 up and 3 down. Looking forward to returning and bagging Tabeguache the next time!

Beautiful way to spend the 4th of July. Steep but manageable hike with a great view in every direction. I didn't go over to Tabaguache this day, all the more reason to come back though. I'd be interested in doing this with the Angel in better shape. It looks like it would be a fun climb.

We started out on the wrong trailhead, the Angel of Shavano, but decided to go ahead and start from there anyway. The next mistake we made was larger, but made for a more enjoyable climb. We began by hiking north on the Colorado Trail to meet up with the Mount Shavano Trail, but we turned west to soon onto a jeep trail that led to a mining area. Thinking that this was the Mount Shavano Trail, and thinking that it was apparenty rarely used, we bushwacked our way out of the trees onto the southeast ridge of Shavano. As soon as we reached the tree line, we noticed the Mount Shavano Trail on the south face of the ridge to our north. We continued our climb up the ridge to Espirit Point then crossed north towards the Shavano saddle. Moving quickly because a 10:00 am thunderstorm was brewing. We got caught in the hail/snow storm just above the Shavano saddle and sat out the storm under a rain poncho. We then climbed the last 800 ft to Shavano. With another line of showers approaching we opted to skip Tabeguache and headed down the Shavano Trail.

Climbed up the Mt Shavano Trail and glissaded the snowfield. Awesome 1,000 ft glissade! The snow was almost too soft but it made the slide very comfortable. :)

Shavano is a steep hike with a ton of vertical. If I were ever to comeback to this mountain I would really be up for an ascent up the Angel of Shavano route.
