Wilson Trail from Sierra Madre
15 miles round trip with nearly 5,000 elevation gain. 8 hours of fun. Trail has definitely some loving volunteers keeping it up. Got very hot on the way out as there is no shade toward to bottom. Great first peak in my new home of LA.
Mount Wilson was one of my favorite training grounds when I lived in LA. Up Chantry Flat/Sturtevant/Manzanita Ridge is the most popular route and probably my favorite due to great views and a great overall trail.
The Toll Road up Eaton is fun but looooong.
The Mount Wilson trail from Sierra Madre is long and has the maximum elevation and incline of any of the trails. It's an awesome training route but has some bees and other obstacles to watch out for.
The Wilson Trail from Chantry/Gabrileno and up the east side of Wilson is a whole bunch of fun. I did that in crampons in February of 2011 and it was a blast and is hardly traveled.
Point being, Wilson is a great mountain with tons of routes. Give it a shot. I've got some pics and gps logs on my blog site summitascents.com. If you have any questions about any of the routes, I'm always happy to help.

From Red Box via Toll Rd.
Dropped back down to road after bagging Disappointment and San Gabriel, then walked the blacktop to the top of Wilson for third peak of the day. Rescued two girls who had come up from Chantry Flat without realizing how far it was.

Hiked in midst of a winter storm: rain on most of the trail, snow at the top.

First Ascent
Left from the Mt. Wilson trailhead in Sierra Madre. Was definitely harder than I was expecting...I think partially due to the heat. I ended up hitting Mount Harvard, Hastings Peak, and Jones Peak on the way back. Kicked my butt as I wasn't prepared for the amount of vertical or time I would be out there. Pretty sweet though.
