Identity of flower beside Dodhipat Lake, Kaghan Valley
This seems to be a clump of what has a number of botanical/Latin names. At one time known as Polygonum affine, then Bistorta affinis (but this appears to be an unresolved name). Whatever its name, Stewart in 'An Annotated Catalogue of the Vascular Plants of Pakistan & Kashmir' described it as common & gregarious on rocky ledges @ 3300-4800m. I have been to Kaghan Valley one time (my only visit to Pakistan) leading a botanical tour back in spring 1987; have seen this plant a lot in the W.Himalaya. I have visited different plants of the Himalaya 20+ times. This plant is cultivated in British gardens, one form is named 'Donald Lowndes', who went (if my memory serves me correctly) on a Bill Tilman Expedition in Nepal in 1950.
