The road closure variues from road to year but most years it is possible to drive past the road closed sign in Winter and get pretty high. As of mid January you were able to drive up to 9,500 ft (the recent storm may have changed that).
People have tried to cross over from Whitney. Going directly cross country along the Sierra Crest is apparently VERY painful (the rock is unbelievably loose). You can do it by dropping down on the West side, but I don't know the details. Better off going via Horseshoe Meadows, if you ask me...
Great Page !!!.....Please take time to check out and give serious consideration and critical input....and vote on the Devils Tower page....thanks Bigwally

Untitled CommentI'd be interested in knowing - maybe on a section of topo - where the road closes in winter. Maybe I'll try to do it myself.
It looks like you might be able to climb it coming south from the Whitney Trail Crest.

Untitled CommentThe detailed routes page is great. The use of colorred lines on photos to depict the trail is very useful ahead of time. Thanks for the solid info.
