Mt Goethe

Mt Goethe

Found in the Glacier Divide along the south wall of Humphrey's Basin this high granite-encircled lake is typical of the highest Sierra found in the John Muir Wilderness. Accessed by an ancient Indian route, Piute Pass, its trail begins at North Lake and ascends to the 11,423 ft summit of Piute Pass. If you summit before noon, you will have views of brilliant white granite peaks everywhere. To reach the Goethe basin from the Pass, when at the summit, veer left on a use trail, follow it for 1 1/2 mile to Muriel Lake, cross the outlet of the lake, and head south about 1/2 mile, climbing towards the huge cirque ahead of you. You will find a small meadow, and the 2 boulder-encitrcled Goethe Lakes.
