Mt. Hood -- Hogsback from Above
The Hogsback from the slope below the old chute (Mazama chute). At left is a well-worn boot path that leads from the upper Hogsback right through the avalanche zone under cliffs shedding rocks and blocks of winter rime ice.
An apparently safer path descends the side of the Hogsback from near its bottom (right) and traverses farther rightward on the distinct path leading over to the patch of dirt at the extreme right of this scene. Ascending that dirt rib -- toward the point from where this photo was taken -- smells bad but avoids much of the avalanche and rockfall hazard.
