Mt. Lyell rising above the Lyell Glacier, September 2007
Mt. Lyell rising above the Lyell Glacier in early September, 2007. The glacier was pretty icy this late in the summer after a low-snow winter. Check out the balanced rock in the lower-left of the picture.

Sand and gravel made travel around the toe of the glacier very easy. We did not need an ice axe to reach the Lyell-Maclure col.
