28 Peaks in 15 Days  Sucess!

The standard norther approach road is now for jeeps, trucks and ATV's only. Our round-trip hike was 24 miles and took 2 days. We camped in upper Hidden Valley and had fun despite the distance. We saw 6 sheep on Muddy Mountain.

Other peaks we did during this trip include; Potosi, Cheyenne, Muddy Peak, Virgin, The Orphan, Silica Dome, Cairn, The Sentinel, East Redstone, Redstone, Mystery Cairn, Vista, Hayford, Clark, McCullough, Spirit, Stepladder, Big Maria, False Maria, Black Butte, Chuckwalla, Pinto, Orocopia, Toro, Santa Rosa, and Thomas.

Muddy Mountain Breakdown  Sucess!

Hiked into Hidden Valley from the wilderness boundary (where some ATV driver cut through the barriers and drove well into the valley. grrr.) and up to the saddle between Muddy Peak and Muddy Mountain. I turned right and climbed Muddy Mountain first, then headed over to Muddy Peak. I took an alternate chute to the summit of Muddy Peak, I think the 2nd chute to the right of the one that is the "standard". This chute went class 4, but the rock was (mostly) good and I wanted to add Muddy Peak to my Desert Explorer Emblem list.

From Lovell Wash   Sucess!

Since BLM closed the gravel road for last 1.5 miles, this hike ends up little over 13 miles round trip.
It was only 6 miles to the Saddle, but it felt longer than that.
Hiking up the canyon part was gorgeous, but walking on the scree made us tired quickly.
We saw only 3-4 sign in per year on the register book. The view from the top was beautiful.

Great hike with Dean  Sucess!

Finally got this one out of the way. We had to do a little route finding after the saddle between Muddy Peak along the ridge which made for some fun scrambling.

A hard day  Sucess!

It was a hard day because I was outta shape. We went in from the TH at Buffington Pockets (high clearance a must) and then from hidden Valley to the saddle between Muddy Peak and the Highpoint. I was with Sacha and he had done Muddy Peak already and since we got a late start, we opted for the Muddy Highpoint. It was nice to finally get to the top and see that old register that sits atop the benchmark. Sacha is a great companion to hike with and he took it easy on me since I was pushing it all day after recovering from a back problem that had kept me from doing anything for three weeks.

from the north  Sucess!

I'd put off doing this thing for years because it looked like such a lame slog compared to nearby Muddy Peak. As it turned out, we found some good scrambling along the way, and the slog factor was low.

Summited with DB, Matthew Holliman, Adam Helman and Bob Packard. Matthew and I then went off and bagged Colorock Summit.

From East Canyon over Muddy Peak  Sucess!

We ascended via East Canyon ( Nick N.'s route), climbed Muddy Peak and Muddy High Point and descended through Hidden Valley. Great loop and fun day.

From Lovell Wash  Sucess!

Pierre and I started from a parking spot far south of Muddy Peak, and went up Lovell Canyon. I've heard that recent changes in the wilderness boundary make the hike about 2 miles longer, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem -- it would then be 12-14 miles RT. The Lovell Canyon part is quite spectacular.

20-mile route hiked; began at Color Rock Quarry & ended on North Shore Road in Lake Mead NRA  Sucess!

Dave McKean, Dave Frey and I led some 14 & 15-year old scouts (Brent Davies, David Cowan, Steve Mounteer, Nick Reed, and Clin Twitchell) on a 20-mile hike from Color Rock Quarry up and over the westerly saddle of the two saddles on the ridge line separating Lovell Canyon from Hidden Valley. All of us except Nick summited the Muddy Mountains highpoint which is due west of Muddy Peak (and 44 feet higher in elevation). We saved climbing Muddy Peak for another day. We then continued south down Lovell Wash (through Anniversary Narrows) and met our shuttle ride back to Henderson at the junction of Lovell Wash and North Shore Road within Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
