The ptarmigans feel safe near the summits. They start getting ready to take off when you're less than two meters away.

Tame

We have these in Scotland too, it's funny how tame they are for wild birds.

I've seen them on the flat in Scotland, normally around rocks and such. I guess I wouldn't see them in the heather anyway. My brother got this photo of a couple in Lairig Ghru in the Cairngorms. Attractive little birds I think.
