Several yrs ago when my boys were 12 & 13 we scrambled up into the saddled/basin area in the late afternoon & camped there. It was a late fall, & clear & when the full moon rose over the summits we spent the night together by the fire talking & playing our harmonica & watching the whole valley below... It was awesome....In the morning we went up to the top of Baring together; it was their first summit -clear & sunny & cold & we'll never forget it...Bdsr
Once on the old road grade, the turn-off to the trail is likely a bit more than the 300 yards that's advertised in the guide books. The cairn marking the turn-off wasn't there when we did it but the creek drainage is very obvious on the right -- steep, filled with rocks. There's no need to stay in this creek bed for long. After about only 10-20 feet up, cut out of the creek to the right and look about 20 feet into the forest to pick up a trail heading up the steep slope to the ridge.
At 2.6 miles from SR2, FS6024 gets pretty rough. I *did* see a minivan farther up the road, but I wouldn't suggest taking anything less than a truck or something with four wheel drive. The road is fairly washed out for about .1 mile, and there is a nice small gorge forming in the middle of the road that will undoubtedly get worse this spring.
Please change the description from class 2 to class 3. I just climbed this last weekend, and we ran into a snow step about 65 degrees, it was very exposed. There is also a large amount of sustained 40 degree slope and some other parts which are certainly class 3.
