Dean, there is now a gate at "work your way up another 1.3 miles to where a large area is on the left side of the road", so driving further than that isn't an option (at least not in the winter - I haven't checked it out in the non-winter).
The road is in great shape right now. A low clearance car will have trouble with some rocky areas, but anything else should make it to the summit just fine. I did park just below the final switchbacks, though, which I recommend as that lets you do a fun loop hike on some ATV tracks up on the ridge to the east. The views of Utah Lake up there are just incredible.

to start each paragraph and that should clean it up dandy.
