Ocotillo with Leaves

Ocotillo with Leaves

The ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) are normally brown and dormant – until it rains. Then the plant revels for a time in the moisture, before again returning to dormancy. Ocotillo are not true cacti. This image was taken at Big Bend Ranch State Park in July 2005, after a very heavy rainfall the evening before.
