at the start of our climb - we actually started a little bit to the east = left, but had a good belay spot (secured with piton).

yes, it was at the base of the climb - so only for the belayer = my partner - to secure himself. It was pretty exposed, and if the leader would have fallen, he would have pulled the belayer a few hundred feet down.
