| Deb | Ontario Peak Trail ![]() Date Climbed: Nov 13, 2010 | |
| Guess we took the relatively easy way up - via Big Horn. Awesome views but the dead trees are sad. Good to have bagged this peak now I have no reason to go back to filthy Icehouse Cyn trailhead! | ||

| Day hike from Icehouse with cold wind blowing on top. Marine layer below the peak made for cool pictures. Kelly's camp was covered in about 6 inches of snow. Great hike! | ||

| Climbed Ontario, Bighorn and Cucamonga Peaks. Started at the icehouse trail head. I only planned on Ontario and Bighorn but Cucamonga was right there so I did it again. 8 1/2 hours car to car. I almost stepped on a southern pacific rattle snake on the descent about a half mile from the car. Beautiful day to be outdoors. | ||

| Solo hike up Falling Rock Canyon, then up the long scree ramp (still 75% covered with snow)to Sugarloaf ridge. Lots of fun scrambling all they way up the crest of the ridgeline. Stayed on the rock as much as I could to avoid the hard snow and the brush. Ran into Miguel Carmona on his way down as I neared Ontario Peak's summit. The north facing slope of Ontario is still completly snow covered. Comming down was fast. This time I stayed in the softened snow as much as possible. Lesurely pace with timeout to chat with Miguel and lunch on the summit....car to car 7.5 hours. | ||

| I hiked a couple of times to Sheep Flat. What a cool place. I once camped there with a friend of mine. I also saw bighorn sheep there, showing the name being appropriate. It is a fun way to access Ontario Peak. I always wanted to hike up Ontario from the south. No routes described there, it looks big, with lots of gain, and probably lots of bushwacking. | ||

| Took the trail from Icehouse Canyon and then the trail to Bighorn Peak. Didn't want to backtrack on the trail on the way down so I went down a canyon almost due north about 800 feet and hit the trail very close to Icehouse Saddle. | ||

| Went up Falling Rock Canyon and the first scree slope west to the peak immediately east of Sugarloaf summit. Continued further on the ridge to Ontario Peak. Climbed Bighorn on the standard trail and descended from the summit directly to Icehouse saddle. Great hike with a lot of up and down steep scree slopes. | ||

| Besides the trail through Kelly's Camp, I've scrambled up numerous chutes and ridges on Ontario's north side. Some are rubble and some have some spots of rock climbing interest. If you're skilled, it offers some snow/ice practice in the winter (be aware that on one outing a member of our party was seriously injured in a fall). Once in 1971 I hiked up Icehouse to Cucamonga, Bighorn and planned on staying the night on Ontario to watch the fireworks before X-country down the north face. It had been a really smoggy day (for those of you that remember those days, I measured how bad it was by how many power poles I could see down a street, bad days were two pole days). I woke up in the dark and was startled by what I thought was a huge forest fire below. Turned out it was the city lights making the smog glow red-orange. Once I had hitched a ride to Icehouse, up Ontario and then hiked down the south side...only time I ever did that: HINT! | ||
